Explore the Global Development Trends and Cutting-Edge Technologies of the Optoelectronic Industry


Optical communications are going to enter a new all-optical network development phase. Among new consumer-grade applications, the demand for video traffic is increasing sharply and becomes the largest driving force. On the supply side, the ratio of fiber-based transmission links is approaching 100%, and the ratio of fiber-based access networks has reached 93%. This means all-optical construction of network-side transmission and access is almost complete, and the development of optical networks will enter a new phase. At this transition stage, over 90% of applications in China will be migrated to the cloud by 2025, and data centers will be fully cloudified. Moreover, intelligent control and management of optical networks based on machine learning will play an important role. In the new phase, optical network performance will continue to approach the Shannon limit, and evolve to cloudification and intelligence.


At the same time, 5G provides new opportunities for mushrooming services, and the application of optical technologies develop from conventional optical connections to new areas such as optical sensing. Currently, optical sensing-related technologies are playing a key role in a variety of fields including the biomedical field, aerospace, oil and gas monitoring, transportation, and civil infrastructure. As these technologies develop and become more mature, the applications and market of optical sensing will be further expanded, with new application scenarios and technical solutions continuously emerging. The market space of optical sensing is growing exponentially, and a new blue ocean market is upcoming.


IPEC, together with CIOE and EPIC, will hold a global webinar on June 29, 2021, focusing on the future development trends of optical communications and the advanced technologies of the optoelectronic industry.


This seminar will invite global professors and experts in the optoelectronic industry to share their opinions on opportunities and challenges in industry development. Wei Leping, Chairman of Technology Steering Committee from China Telecom Corporation Limited, will discuss the trends and challenges of all-optical network evolution in the 5G era and offer views and suggestions for industry development. Alan E. Willner, Steven and Kathryn Sample Chair in Engineering and Distinguished Professor of ECE from the University of Southern California, will talk about frontier topics related to free-space optical communications, non-conventional wavelengths, and optical signal processing (OSP). Professor Hideaki Murayama from the University of Tokyo will share his research on the applications and standards of fiber sensors.


IPEC plans to hold an online workshop on advanced optoelectronic technologies on June 29, 2021 to discuss cutting-edge technologies and the future development trend of the optoelectronic industry. This workshop will be a global platform for international optoelectronic experts to share opinions about opportunities in and challenges to the industry. We sincerely invite you to attend this event.
